I personally still take the approach that all players need a solid foundation of skill and from there they can build or add to their games. I talk about their tool box of shots, have a good selection within and then learn to read the conditions, the game and all relevant factors and play accordingly. Knowing your game and playing to your strengths is important. When in doubt, keep it simple!
Adaptability is the key.
To be successful you must continually make good decisions based on information gathered though if you haven’t developed a sound foundation of skill, a toolbox of shots to draw upon, it will be challenging to score runs and ultimately that is what batting is about.
